24 August 2015, John Lindsey photographer, as best I can tell. A DC-10 pilot drops in to combat the Chelan fire in WA. Google “Chelan tanker” for other good images. I like how it still has the windows from its former life as an airliner. How many passengers would pay *extra* for that ride? Embarrassed to say, I probably would.

Do the same search, but click the video results, too. There is some amazing piloting skill being put to use there.

It’s an awesome spectacle, but it is interesting that there’s apparently no evidence that aerial firefighting is actually effective, let alone cost effective. There’s anecdotal evidence of course, or we wouldn’t do it, but actual evidence has never really been studied to determine if and when it is worth doing. Doing a quick search here’s an article from 2013 saying basically the same thing: http://trib.com/news/state-and…

DC-10 sightseeing hasn’t worked out so great in the past:

Regardless, every person they carry is less fire retardant they can manage, so not a great deal, though I guess they could offer thrill rides when there aren’t any fires.

Good crimany I love this photo. And I can't decide which trijet I like better... the DC-10/MD-11 or L1011 Tristar.

Some of it is telephoto lens foreshortening, and some of it is the nature of Western WA terrain (volcanic terrane in a young, convergent boundary dominated by glaciation). This results in sharp ridges that are often separated widely enough for a good aircraft approach to skim over the top. Plus, the pilot is likely super trained and slightly crazy. So, there is that.

It is very interesting. Most of the papers on it are very recent (less than 5 years), and almost always from the CSIRO (Aussie) journal, International Journal Of Wildland Fire. Like this one: http://www.publish.csiro.au/paper/WF13031.… , they are not conclusive. There look to be a couple of promising papers that attempt to evaluate efficacy, but they’re all behind a paywall. I’ll have to see if I can get them through work. They’re related to some of our sites anyway.

Oh, I certainly didn’t think it was a *good* idea to joyride that way, whether on a mission or not, just that I would probably be dumb enough to pay to do it. Maybe. I’m dumb, but I’m also really cheap.
